Torrefied Biomass Feedstock

Biomass: an abundant feedstock

“Biomass” means organic matter that is available on a renewable or recurring basis. It includes everything from trees and plant matter to offal and tallow from animal rendering.  In the context of energy, “biomass” refers to the lowest cost materials that do not have a higher value like food, feed, lumber, or fiber. HM3 Energy‘s TorrB™ technology creates clean energy using woody biomass and other ligno-cellulosic material as feedstock. This includes a wide range of residual materials, such as:

  • Agricultural residues, such as corn stover, wheat straw, ryegrass straw, orchard prunings and similar material left after harvest
  • Woody biomass, left as residual from harvesting or thinning conducted to improve privately owned forest or rangeland ecological health by reducing fuel loading in overstocked forest stands which are at high risk of wild fires
  • Urban wood waste, including construction and demolition debris, yard debris, and brush cleared from right of ways

HM3 Energy does not use food sources or compete with value-added manufacturers for feedstock. We use corn stover, but not corn. We do not plan to compete for feedstock with value-added manufacturers (such as dimensional lumber, wood chips for pulp and paper, or particle and fiber board manufacturers using mill residue). We also require that our biomass feedstock be sustainably grown, harvested or gathered.

Several studies have been done concerning biomass feedstock available nationwide.
